TOURISM EXPERIENCE DAY
In mid-January, the TSBG hosted the Tourism Experience DAY. Visitors were able to try their hand at various stations: Whether it was scooping pancakes, serving food or exploring the Metaverse with VR glasses, there was plenty to discover.
Junior chefs
Our junior chefs are also hard at work during the summer term. Whether it was spaetzle, spring rolls, BBQ or pizza, the junior chefs were very busy and of course they had fun too!
Mock day on the Campus
In the week before the semester break, we welcomed a group of future students to the campus and of course we got straight down to business in the kitchen, but also in accounting, tourism geography, Spanish, English and marketing….
TSBG football party
Happy Carnival was the motto at our school on Shrove Tuesday afternoon and everyone was in Superbowl fever! The party was organized by the students of HL4ab.
DJ Markus Allmer from the HL5a provided the sound and the HL4s heated up the atmosphere with a cheerleader choreography.
Competition for young sommeliers 23/24 Austria
1st and 2nd place in the nationwide young sommelier competition go to the Bad Gleichenberg tourism schools
Once again this year, two TSBG students, Fabio Agnello and Vitus Lanzer, took part in the Austria-wide young sommelier competition. They were supervised by wine experts and head of department Horst Rossegger. In addition to wine service, theoretical wine knowledge and an understanding of the importance of wine for Austrian culture, the program included a wine presentation of their personal favorite wine in front of a top-class jury of experts. Of the original 35 candidates from vocational schools from all over Austria, 15 participants from 12 Austrian schools competed against each other in the two-day national competition.
The weeks of intensive wine training definitely paid off, as Fabio Agnello secured 1st place and can now proudly call himself the Austrian Young Sommelier 2023/24. Vitus Lanzer achieved an outstanding 2nd place. There was also a prize for the best host, which was also won by the Bad Gleichenberg tourism schools, or rather by Vitus Lanzer.
Even after graduating from TSBG, the two will not let go of the subject of wine, as they are aiming for careers in this field. They have definitely achieved a great milestone with their results in the young sommelier competition.
Next year, the competition will become even more tangible, as the Bad Gleichenberg tourism schools will be the venue for the nationwide competition in the coming school year.
Cheese connoisseur examination Diplomas
On March 13, the students of HL3 and TGA 3 were able to demonstrate their knowledge of cheese, which was taught to them by subject teacher Alfred Lindner as part of the cheese connoisseur training. The exam was very successful – all students passed! They duly celebrated their success with a glass of sparkling wine and, of course, a plate of cheese.
“Up and down the hill”…
Finally, another ski course – and this year for a particularly large group – the first and second classes of the tourism schools were in Schladming to enjoy winter wonderland once again in the last week before the Easter vacations. A lot of fun was guaranteed!
TGA launch trip to Lisbon:
The TGA 3 graduation trip, the first of its kind in the 3-year technical college, was a wonderful shared experience. With spring-like temperatures, good food and a suitable cultural program, the class was able to enjoy a few quiet days, of course also on the beach. “A big thank you for the organization and realisation goes to our class leader Karin Hirschmugl – we already know where we will have our first class reunion – obrigado!”, said the TGA3 unanimously.
China meets Gleichenberg
The Confucius Institute Graz and the WIFI organized a Chinese week at the campus of the Bad Gleichenberg tourism schools in April. The theme week was intended to give participants and our classes the opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and tradition. In addition to a gala dinner prepared by Chinese chefs and served by students from the college under the direction of administrator Erich Pölzl, there was a week-long opportunity to try their hand at Chinese calligraphy or paper folding.
Eurolingua – Rhea Terner from HL5b excelled with her performance!
The Eurolingua competition is organized by the province of Styria and tests various languages. Hundreds of pupils from all over Styria take part. After a preliminary test in Listening and Reading, which is carried out at the individual schools, the best students are invited to the Wifi in Graz. There a preliminary oral round takes place. Afterwards, the best students from the general secondary schools and the vocational secondary schools are invited to a stage competition.
Rhea Terner has achieved English Gold for the BHS Steiermark! Congratulations for this great achievement.
Bonjour nos amis! – Erasmus project with Menton
The contact with Menton via Erasmus worked again this year. Eight students from the Paul Valéry tourism school completed a 3-week internship in service, kitchen and patisserie in south-eastern Styria. This was complemented by a cultural programme in Graz and Vienna, organized and carried out by their teachers Sylvie Arnaud and Jean-Claude Brugel.
College Night out
A college school year flies by, especially in the final year. That’s why the school hosted a College Night out for both years in mid-April, before the 4KA finally entered the hot phase of their exams and the 2 KA entered the final weeks before their summer internship. First, they went to the Wilde Schwestern for a snack at a wine tavern and then tasted some fine wines in the school’s own wine cellar.
Silberberg Exchange
Together stronger – there is no better way to describe the school partnership between the Silberberg Education Center and the Bad Gleichenberg tourism schools. Wine and tourism belong together and what better way to learn from each other than to immerse yourself in each other’s world. For this reason, our young sommeliers were in Silberberg in January and March as part of our student exchange and at the same time students from the Silberberg Education Center visited us on the campus. The programme included workshops on bar & spirits, cheese and wine, coffee, cocktails, cooperations, press relations & online marketing and much more.
Outstanding 3rd place in the youth speech competition
On Thursday, April 25, three HLT students went to the Styrian Youth Speech Competition. At the Montanuniversität Leoben, our students competed against the best in Styria in the category of spontaneous speech. Maximilian Ziegler, from class 5B, ranked 3rd with his spontaneous speech.
Congratulations!
FEX to Mauthausen and Linz
HL3 and HL4, together with class teachers Bianca Ranz, Florian Pölzl and Leopold Suppan, went on a two-day excursion to Upper Austria at the end of April. On the first day, a visit to the Mauthausen Memorial was on the agenda. Other items on the agenda included a city tour of Linz, a visit to the Ars Electronica Centre and a guided tour of Schlierbach Abbey, including cheese tasting.
Examination dinner 2024
Once again this year, there was a certain buzz and tension in the air, days before the start of the first exam dinners. Concentrated and focused students in chef and service outfits hurried through the corridors or worked on their bar and menu cards.
As every year, the soon-to-be graduates of the Academy for Tourism and Taste and the Tourism College opened the series of examination dinners. The exam dinner season ends at the beginning of June with the 4th grade students of the secondary school.
Before the eyes of proud parents, excited practical teachers and curious guests of honour, an aperitif was prepared and served – followed by the students serving the exam dinner.
While nervous smiles could still be seen on the faces of the kitchen and service team at the beginning of the evening, a relieved and liberated mood prevailed at the end.
The big goal of closing the deal has not yet been achieved, but it is certainly an intermediate victory. For a few weeks, and in the case of the secondary school even another school year, they will have to keep going and work hard until the big goal of the graduation ceremony will be reached.
Kitzbühel
When Kitzbühel calls, not only the celebrities come, but also the Bad Gleichenberg tourism schools. Under the direction of administrator Erich Pölzl, the 3KA students spent three intensive days working there. An experience that will not soon be forgotten.
Grazetta Anniversary Celebration
In February, the Grazetta in Graz celebrated its 7th anniversary, bringing together celebrities from the worlds of culture and business. Right in the middle of the service, the students of the Bad Gleichenberg tourism schools performed brilliantly.
All waltzes at the Opera Ball
A small TSBG team from the A-level class, led by cookery teacher Christian Klapsch, had the pleasure of experiencing the unique atmosphere of the Vienna Opera Ball today. Although the students were not able to dance as debutante couples but were on duty as service staff, it was nevertheless a unique and unforgettable experience.
The Kastner Fair
The Kastner Fair has been a fixture in the “TSBG work calendar” for many years. It is usually one of the first major assignments for our second classes. This year, however, the third classes stepped in as the fair took place during the HL2 ski course week. Of course, the HL3 did their job with flying colours and routine.
Kastner is a long-standing partner of the tourism schools.
Munich is always worth a visit…
Bayern Munich and the Bad Gleichenberg tourism schools
In the summer term, the TSBG were also on duty at the Bayern Munich Champions League games in the Allianz Arena. Pupils and students from all three types of school had the unique pleasure of attending the matches. They are always supervised by administrator Erich Pölzl….
ÖHV Congress 2024 in Graz
In April, the ÖHV Congress took place for the first time after a long time in Styria again, more precisely in Graz – a must for the Bad Gleichenberg tourism schools, of course. Students from the 2nd to 5th grade of the secondary school worked at the various events on the Schlossberg, in the congress centre and in the Seifenfabrik. They were supervised by the team of service teachers under the direction of Horst Rossegger.
Südsteiermark Classic
The Südsteiermark Classic has been a regular fixture in the TSBG calendar for years. This year, the students from HL3 and HL4 took on this task under the direction of their practical teacher Josef Sorger and administrator Erich Pölzl.
